Pregnancy and rapid weight loss can be exciting times, but they may also be coupled with an unwanted partner – stretch marks. As the skin quickly stretches or shrinks, the dermal layer of the skin may tear, resulting in the scars that we call stretch marks. The narrow bands of red scarring may also be the result of growth spurts, muscle growth and weight gain. Whatever the cause, their appearance can lead to body confidence issues.
Harpenden Skin Clinic can help. The most effective way to reduce the appearance of stretch marks is known as Fractional Resurfacing. The treatment uses an ablative Erbium laser, which removes the outer layer of the skin. After the top layer of skin is destroyed, strong beams of light are directed at the skin, stimulating collagen production.
This helps to repair the damaged tissue and as the skin grows back it is restructured. Although fractional resurfacing does not completely remove stretch marks, they are made much smoother, drastically reducing their appearance. (We also use Derma-needling & growth factors)
THIS TREATMENT IS TAILORED TO EACH PATIENTS NEEDS & BASED ON AN INITIAL CONSULTATION
The level of discomfort depends on the area being treated and the patient’s individual tolerance for pain. Patients generally report minimal pain during the procedure, comparing the sensation to that of a rubber band snapping against the skin.
Although laser treatments are considered non-surgical, ablative lasers such as the Erbium laser can require 2-3 weeks healing. This is due to the removal of the outermost layer of the skin. The skin may be raw and scab over as it heals meaning some activities, such as swimming, should be avoided.
The full effect of the results can be seen once the skin has healed. Results can last for years, but this depends on skin type.
