Thread veins are small, flat lines that appear in a web-like pattern. A thread vein can be red, blue or purple in colour and does not normally cause any pain.

Many people wish to get rid of them because of the way they look, particularly when they appear on the face.

For removal of thread veins on the face:

  • Laser light treatment
  • Diathermy, using high-frequency electrical current

Laser treatments in Hertfordshire

At Harpenden Skin Clinic, unwanted thread veins are treated using a laser treatment known as Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Skin Rejuvenation.

Laser treatment is a safe and effective method. Light from the laser is directed at the veins, causing them to heat up very quickly. The heat causes the vein to break down and collapse in on itself.

IPL is a non-invasive treatment that targets everything from facial thread veins to redness, sun damage to rosacea. Whatever your skin concern, IPL may provide the answer, and we’d be happy to advise you at our clinic on how IPL can help with any of your issues.

What causes spider veins?

Veins pump deoxygenated blood back to the heart. Blood should only flow in one direction, but sometimes the valves that prevent blood from moving backwards are damaged.

Thread veins are formed when blood leaks back into the lower part of the vein and begins to pool. While unsightly thread veins are not generally a cause for a medical concern, for aesthetic purposes, people may seek treatments to reduce them. Laser treatments can be very effective for this.

Who gets thread veins?

The most common causes of thread veins are ageing, frequent alcohol consumption, injury to the face, changes in weather and sun exposure. Genetics can also play a part.

People who suffer from rosacea, liver disease, or connective tissue diseases often have facial thread veins.

If you have thread veins but still feel unsure, at Harpenden Skin Clinic we are always here to help and advise patients on the best possible treatment performed by experienced clinicians.

CONTACT US

We are highly experienced in treating a range of conditions. We offer laser treatment options performed by our laser therapists, as well as other effective cosmetic procedures for all kinds of skin treatment work.

How laser therapy works on thread veins

In Intense Pulsed Light laser therapy, IPL applicators deliver powerful brief pulses of light, targeting pigmentation or imperfections such as broken blood vessels and broken capillaries, as well as general redness, without affecting the surrounding tissue.

The dermal layer of the skin is heated without removing the outer layer. This triggers the body’s natural process of breaking down the pigment into tiny particles, removing unwanted marks from the skin,

This treatment will target redness and help to eliminate broken blood vessels and thread veins. Whatever your issue, IPL treatment may help. IPL Skin Rejuvenation is non-invasive and targets many types of skin imperfection – from facial thread veins to sun damage, rosacea and discolouration caused by acne.

Diathermy treatment

Diathermy is another vein treatment that can reduce, and in some cases completely remove, thread veins in a matter of seconds.

In this procedure, a fine needle is passed over the affected area of small broken blood vessels, transmitting a high-frequency electrical current, which seals the vessel, blocking blood flow.

Does Diathermy hurt?

Patients describe Diathermy as mildly uncomfortably and the skin may look pink or puffy afterwards. Recovery time is quick and no anaesthetic is required.

When will I see results?

This is only temporary and will subside after a few hours. After 2-3 days, tiny scabs may appear, but they soon fall off, revealing vein-free skin.

How many treatments do I need?

While one treatment is sufficient in most cases, the number of treatments needed for optimal results will depend on the severity of your thread veins. However, you are unlikely to require treatments for long periods.

Sclerotherapy treatment

Microsclerotherapy is an effective treatment option at Harpenden Skin Clinic for the treatment of thread veins and small varicose veins that appear on the legs.

Varicose veins treatment

The treatment uses a very fine needle to inject a liquid into the vein, which subsequently becomes hard to the touch. After sclerotherapy injections, the liquid is absorbed by the body, destroying the vein. Most people report a significant reduction in the appearance of small varicose veins and thread veins on their legs following the procedure.

Which vein treatment is best for me?

At Harpenden Skin Clinic, we are firm believers in the ‘less is more’ approach.

When you see us for an initial consultation, we will give you advice on the best treatment for achieving the results you want.

We can also discuss the cost to provide treatment and provide a treatment price quotation at this appointment.

Concerns and questions

Some people ask if removing spider veins requires surgery or a hospital stay. The answer to both is no. Complications as a result of the procedure are rare and it is not one of the most expensive health procedures.

Our healthcare consultants will guide you through the whole process and you’ll be treated with the best care.
