Seborrheic keratoses are not contagious and they have no link to cancer. There are several common skin lesions that pose no threat to your health, such as skin tags, certain moles, and warts.
While seborrheic keratosis is different to skin tags and warts, they are equally harmless. However, because they can be unsightly, people often want them treated for cosmetic skin reasons.
At Harpenden Skin Clinic we normally use cryotherapy to treat seborrheic keratoses. This is a form of ‘cold therapy’ for freezing off skin lesions, and the specific cryotherapy procedure we use is the CryoPen.
With cryotherapy, only the targeted area is treated. Cold therapy does not affect cells beyond the treated area.
As well as providing treatment for the removal of age spots, pigmentation and birthmarks the CryoPen offers a quick and effective solution to the removal of skin lesions including seborrheic keratoses.
The CryoPen method uses nitrous oxide gas against the skin. The tip of the CryoPen reaches a temperature of -80 degrees Celsius, creating a thermal shock in the target skin or lesion.
The freezing temperature kills the cells, destroying the problem area, without collateral damage to healthy tissue. There is minimal risk of scarring using this method of cryotherapy.
While other procedures are available to remove seborrheic keratoses, we use the CryoPen form of cryotherapy due to its simplicity and effectiveness.
The cryoPen is non-invasive and can be used to treat virtually any skin lesion with treatment times lasting around two minutes. It offers the fastest lesion removal around.
Our seborrheic keratosis removal does not require anaesthesia like minor surgery can. Only the problem cells are targeted with the CryoPen, leaving the healthy cells in the surrounding skin and tissue intact.
There’s minimal discomfort, downtime and scarring with this removal procedure at our skin clinic.
Seborrheic keratosis and skin tags are not the same. The causes of seborrheic keratosis and skin tags differ, and the conditions look different too.
While the exact cause of skin tags is unclear, it’s believed that friction or rubbing of the skin may play a role. Seborrheic keratoses on the other hand are thought to be related to ageing and sun exposure. Both skin tags and seborrheic keratosis are generally harmless, but many people choose to have them removed for cosmetic reasons.
As we mentioned earlier, seborrheic keratoses have no relationship to skin cancer and do not pose a risk to your health. Unlike moles, they never turn into melanoma. Occasionally, they can become inflamed or irritated, causing pain and itching.
