Laser Treatment for Stretch Marks Hertfordshire

At Harpenden Skin Clinic in Hertfordshire we offer laser treatment as a method of stretch mark reduction.

Stretch marks form as a consequence of living in our own skin. Our skin undergoes so much wear and tear throughout our lives. It grows with us, adapting when gain and lose weight, or become pregnant.

Stretch marks can be a reminder of tough times in life, but of joyous moments as well. Nevertheless, these red and silver bands of scar tissue can lead to body confidence issues that diminish quality of life for many people.

Fractional resurfacing, using laser technology, is the most effective way to reduce the appearance of stretch marks. The treatment is non-invasive and can be performed with minimal risk.

It is important to note, however, that most scars – including stretch marks – cannot be eradicated completely. Yet, their appearance can be drastically reduced so that that they are practically invisible and the skin surface smooth.

Please give us a call on 01582 822000 or contact us online for more information and advice.

What causes stretch marks?

Stretch marks are caused by the skin stretching or shrinking at a rapid rate. When the skin is given less time than normal to adapt to changes in the body, the dermal tissue can tear, resulting in scarring.

Stretch marks often form in bands of raised parallel lines. The most common areas they are found in are the stomach, chest, upper arms, legs and bottom. Their colour can change from dark red or purple to light pink or silver and varies from person to person.

Causes include:

  • Growth spurts
  • Rapid muscle gain
  • Rapid weight gain or loss
  • Pregnancy

How does laser treatment work on stretch marks?

At our Hertfordshire clinic, we perform fractional laser treatment for stretch marks with an ablative Erbium laser.

The laser removes the upper layer of skin over the stretch mark. Intense beams of light are then used to stimulate collagen production in the lower dermal layers.

Collagen is a natural protein that the body produces to give the skin its elasticity. Increasing collagen levels in the skin helps to repair damaged tissue and restructure the skin surface, leaving it smooth and unblemished.

Alternative treatments for stretch marks include derma-needling and growth factors. You can book a consultation with one of our qualified technicians to discuss the best path of treatment for you and your skin. At Harpenden, all treatment is tailored to individual patient needs and we’ll take the time to answer your questions and allay your concerns.

What is the process of stretch mark laser treatment?

First you will have an initial consultation at our Hertfordshire clinic to determine the best course of treatment for you.

The procedure itself takes roughly 30 minutes. We will offer you the option of topical anaesthesia, but patients have reported minimal discomfort during the treatment, comparable to a rubber band snapping.

We recommend up to three weeks of downtime after ablative laser treatment, allowing for the outermost layer of skin to heal. The raw skin can scab over, which makes activities such as swimming unpractical.

Results can be seen after about four weeks, when the skin has fully healed. Depending on your skin type, results can last for years.
