Frequently asked questions

What are the benefits of chemical skin peels?

Chemical skin peels can be very effective at reducing the appearance of fine surface lines, wrinkles, blemishes, pigment problems and acne scarring, to significantly improve the appearance and texture of your skin. Many clients choose chemical peels to reduce the ageing effects of smoking and sun exposure, giving their skin a more youthful, healthy appearance.

The formulation of chemical skin peels can be individually tailored to your needs, enabling us to target specific areas or treat the skin on your face, arms, hands or neck.

How do chemical skin peels work?

A chemical skin peel works by removing old and dead skin cells on the surface of the skin, to promote new cell growth. Skin peels can be used to treat specific problem areas (such as lines around the eyes or mouth) or can be applied on a broader scale to the face, arms, hands and neck.

There are three types of chemical skin peel:

  1. Superficial chemical peel
  2. Medium chemical peel
  3. Deep chemical peel

With all types of peel you may need to use specified home care products, before your treatment. These products help to prepare your skin and ensure that it is in optimum condition prior to your peel. It’s worth nothing that you may also be required to use specified, follow-up, home care products, post peel. Your before and after care will be discussed fully with you at your initial consultation.

What types of peels are used?

At Harpenden Skin Clinic we use a wide range of leading superficial and medium chemical skin peels, all of which are tailored to your individual needs. These include Neostrata glycolic peels, Priori lactic acid, SkinCeuticals’ salicylic acid, deep pigment peels and Obagi systems.

What happens during the procedure?

You will be asked to attend a full consultation, at which point you will undergo a comprehensive skin analysis session and, of course, have the opportunity to discuss your treatment options. The majority of chemical skin peels require use of a pre-treatment, home-use product, for two-to-six weeks to help prepare your skin. The actual procedure only takes about 15-20 minutes. During this time, you may experience anything from a mild tingling to a warming of the skin, as the peel is applied.

What will I look like immediately after each treatment?

Following your treatment, you will be able to resume your day-to-day activities with no down time. We can cover the very slight redness which may occur following a chemical skin peel, immediately, with mineral make-up, making any potential after-effects unnoticeable.

What should I do/not do after treatment?

You will be able to return to your normal activities straight away. You should avoid sun exposure for 48 hours and effective sun protection needs to be applied, thereafter.

You should start seeing visible improvements in the texture of your skin, immediately. By removing the old damaged cells and promoting the growth of new healthy ones these improvements will continue to blossom over time.

How many treatments do I need?

For optimum results, we recommend a course of six treatments, typically spaced out at two-to-four weekly intervals. The best results are normally achieved after six treatments and clients are usually able to maintain the results with a follow-up chemical skin peel, every three months.
