Frequently asked questions

I've tried numerous laser hair removal systems, but have always found it painful. Is there a painless alternative?

At Harpenden Skin Clinic we use Soprano ICE Laser Hair Removal, which is the leading pain-free hair removal system. The Soprano ICE offers superior results that are more consistent and reliable for every skin colour (unlike other lasers, which give inconsistent results for different skin types and darker skin colours). It also delivers excellent results when treating sensitive skin and body areas, thanks to its gentle sweeping massage technique. The Soprano ICE combines the best laser for hair removal – using the industry ‘Gold Standard’ 810-nm diode – with an exclusive ‘in motion’ approach. The sensation felt during the treatment has been likened to a ‘hot stone massage’ (whereas other hair removal lasers can feel like a rubber band snapping at your skin or create an unpleasant burning sensation). There is less risk of side effects associated with the Soprano ICE than other hair removal lasers. This is because the ‘Gold Standard’ 810-nm diode laser heats the sub-dermal layers first, providing more protection to the dermis, even in darker skins. The system also uses a dual chilled cooling head to further protect the skin.

I’ve read some really positive things about chemical skin peels, but I’ve seen pictures of celebrities, post skin peel, that look red and scaly. Will this happen to me?

It really isn’t the case that you will leave the clinic looking red and scaly. The chemical skin peels are surprisingly gentle and, although they may cause some slight redness immediately after the treatment, we can cover this easily with mineral make-up. You can return to your normal activities immediately after the procedure.
We use a wide range of leading superficial and medium chemical skin peels that can be tailored to your individual needs – these include Priori lactic acid, SkinCeuticals’ salicylic acid, deep pigment peels and Obagi systems.

Since giving birth, 6-months ago, the skin on my stomach appears to have lost it's elasticity. Is there anything I can do?

You might like to consider our skin tightening procedure, which is brilliant for tackling that post-pregnancy loose skin. At Harpenden Skin Clinic we use the cutting-edge technology of the Soprano XL Near-Infrared Skin Tightening Laser, which works through deep thermal heating, stimulating dermal contraction and collagen rebuilding in order to give you firmer, younger looking skin.
Skin tightening can really help to restore, tone and tighten your skin without the need for a ‘mummy tuck’ or similar surgical procedures. For a busy mum like you, skin tightening is particularly appealing because it doesn’t require any down time and the procedure causes minimal discomfort.

I would love to have my 'crows feet' treated with Botox, but I’m scared of ending up with a dropping eyelid (ptosis). What do you recommend?

This is a common concern for people who have never used Botox but in the staggering number of cases Botox is remarkably safe and free of side effects. Where dropping eye (ptosis) does occur, it is usually down to poor aftercare advice or the inexperience of the practitioner. Fortunately, at Harpenden Skin Clinic, our pre- and aftercare advice are exceptional and our aesthetic nurse practitioner, Janne Maheson, has extensive experience in safely administering Botox injections.

Discretion is very important to me. I don’t want the reception staff knowing which treatment(s) I’ve had. Is this possible?

It is central to the work carried out at the Harpenden Skin Clinic that we provide a discrete, professional and ethical service. Your privacy and the confidentiality of your treatment are paramount. You are very welcome to book an appointment without specifying what it is for with the staff on reception. All of the treatments are coded by our aesthetic nurse practitioner, Janne Maheson, so that the reception staff do not know what procedure has just been carried out.
